Jabrick
Our Inspiration
The baby orangutan featured on this Certification Trademark is Jabrick.
In Feb, 2015 one year old Jabrick was stolen from her mother whilst she was being killed. Habitat destruction gives illegal poachers easier access to animals that ordinarily would be harder to reach.
Jabrick was weak and underweight. Her 'surrogate parents' (who were local villagers) realised they did not know how to care for such a young baby and thankfully, surrendered her to COP Borneo Rehabilitation Centre.
Jabrick was severely malnourished as she had only been fed condensed milk. An orangutan baby in the wild can suckle from their mother for 7 to 8 yrs whilst being taught the myriad of foods the rainforests offer by their mother. JABRICK was so young when poached and so was denied the many antibodies and nutrients normally absorbed from Mum.
When Jabrick first arrived at the Rehabilitation Centre it took many months to bring her health to a level where she could attend 'Forest School'. Although she was only a baby she was one of the top climbers and would often not want to come down at the end of the day.
In Nov 2015 Jabrick, whose immune system was compromised caught Malaria. She became extremely ill and required 24hr care. Again the little fighter slowly started to recover and was able to return to Forest School. Once again she would climb the highest tree and not want to come down at the end of each day (was she looking for her Mum, who knows?).
In Late Dec 2015, JABRICK caught the flu. Jabrick received medical aid but her condition deteriorated as she would not eat or drink. Sadly on 15th January JABRICK climbed her highest tree yet and passed away.
This Certification Trademark is dedicated to her and the hundreds of thousands of fauna who have lost their lives due to deforestation and habitat destruction globally.
